Everyone has experienced a bout of vertigo (dizziness) at some point in their life. While it is most often not linked to a serious health condition, it truly can be very disturbing. Periods of temporary loss of vision and imbalance often accompany the vertigo symptom. Below you will discover a short article that is filled with information that will help you self-diagnose your condition.
Cause Of Dizzy Spells
Trying to find the source of the vertigo can be very challenging, since the symptom is linked to hundreds of underlying health conditions. You will need to provide your primary care physician with your medical history and commit to a physical exam. Many children will suffer from otitis media, which is a common middle ear infection. This condition is often a secondary condition brought on by rhinitis (common cold), viral and bacterial upper respiratory infections, and pharyngitis (sore throat).
The Eustachian tubes, malleus stapes, incus, and eardrum make up a large portion of the middle ear. Fluid and inflammation will build up in this area and cause otitis media, which can be linked to the following symptoms:
- Low-grade fever
- Temporary hearing loss
- The affected ear will drain fluid or pus
- Imbalance sensation
- Pulling on the ear
- Restlessness and irritability
Dizziness And Headaches
BPPV or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is a very common vestibular disorder that affects pregnant females. The sensory organ, ultricle is the point of origin. The ultricle is partially made up of calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia). Otoconia can break off of the ultricle and make its way to the semicircular canals, where it will become lodged. Since these canals main responsibility is to control balance, the dislodged crystals will cause an alteration in the equilibrioception (sense of balance).
There are many symptoms that are linked to BPPV including:
- Imbalance sensation
Trauma, infection, age, and a hormonal imbalance may be the contributing factor of BPPV. Maternal vasodilation is a physiological phenomenon that has been linked to the female hormone relaxin, which is produced in the ovaries and placenta. Relaxin will cause vasodilation (lengthening of the blood vessels), which will increase blood flow, while decreasing the blood pressure.
Maternal vasodilation most often occurs during the first trimester (1st week-end of 13th week) and should disappear by the second trimester. BPPV is triggered by sudden body and head position changes, so stand up and sit up in bed very slowly to avoid these triggers.
Why Am I Dizzy
A very common condition that stems from the buildup of endolymph (fluid) in the labyrinth is Meniere’s disease. This condition can cause several different symptoms including:
- 1-20 minute episodes of vertigo
- Temporary hearing loss
- Tinnitus (ringing sound in ears)
- Fullness sensation in the affected ear
The labyrinth is made up of the organs of balance and the cochlea (organ of hearing). Many medical professionals have linked migraines with Meniere’s, since it causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels). Allergies and viral infections may also play a huge role in the manifestation of Meniere’s.
How To Cure Vertigo
The first step of finding a cure to vertigo is a genuine diagnosis. Finding the source of the problem will be very challenging, but with the proper diagnostic tools, your physician will be able to diagnose and treat your condition.
- Lying on your side (will effectively decrease your blood pressure level)
- Stand and sit up slowly
- Avoid sudden head positional changes
- Consume plenty of water and healthy foods
- Avoid lying in the supine position (flat on back)
- Take your prenatal vitamins with iron as directed to prevent anemia (low serum RBCs)
Dizziness When Lying Down
Lying in the supine position during the second (beginning of 13th-end of 26th week) and third trimester (beginning of 27th-40th week or birth) should be avoided. Supine hypotension syndrome commonly effects nearly 8% of pregnant females, which is caused by compression of the inferior vena cava (largest vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body back to the heart). The fetus will compress the inferior vena cava, which will cause a decrease in the blood flow, which will cause vertigo, hypotension, anxiety and nausea.
Leachco Snoogle Total Pillow will help keep you positioned on your side, while you are sleeping, so you do not turn over on your back, which can cause supine hypotension syndrome.
